Made in Brunel 2008: The Directory

A showcase of innovative work in design, multimedia, and mechanical and electrical engineering by the graduates of the School of Engineering and Design at Brunel University, with contributions from international partner institutions and leading thinkers.

As co-editor of the 264 page book, published in an edition of 8000, I was jointly responsible for the coordination, design, production, and delivery of this integral part of the final year degree show. Working to a tight deadline - the final push to bring it all together was sandwiched between final exams and a non-negotiable press-deadline less than a week later - we combined projects in design, engineering, and multimedia into a powerful communication of the university's educational outlook and student output - and a treasured keepsake for those involved. In addition to work from Brunel, contributions from Delft (NL), RISD (USA), Tsinghua (CN), and IIT Madras (IN), and essays from students and leading external thinkers such as John Maeda, for the first time gave a global perspective and highlighted relevant and topical issues.

My Tethered Nomads and Guardian projects were featured in the book, as was my essay Tangible/Intangible. I worked closely with Ed and James as co-editors. We had four alternative covers, with the cover photography by myself and Chris; between us we also took most of the process and feature images sprinkled throughout the publication.
